Collection: Toyohiko Satoh

Toyohiko Satoh (born November 4, 1943 in Fukuyama, Hiroshima) is an internationally renowned Japanese lutenist, composer, and educator who ranks among the most important interpreters of historical lute music. His artistic career took him from studying guitar and music history in Tokyo to the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, where he studied baroque lute with Eugen Müller-Dombois.

Since the early 1970s, Satoh has been one of the defining figures in the historical lute-playing tradition: in 1970, he recorded the first LP exclusively featuring Baroque lute music and has since made extensive recordings, including solo and chamber music recordings for major labels such as Philips, Telefunken, EMI, and Channel Classics Records. As a soloist and chamber musician, he has performed worldwide and appeared in renowned concert halls such as Carnegie Recital Hall in New York, where his musically intense lute playing and rhythmic finesse have been praised.

As a teacher, Satoh has influenced several generations of lutenists: from 1973 to 2004, he was a professor at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague (Netherlands) and led numerous master classes in Europe, North America, and Japan. To this day, he is president of the Lute & Early Guitar Society in Japan. Since returning to Japan in 2004, he has devoted himself intensively to the Japanese tea ceremony, Noh theater, and traditional Japanese arts.

Repertoire and artistic focus

Toyohiko Satoh's repertoire covers a wide range of Baroque and Renaissance lute music as well as his own compositions. His interpretations are characterized by precise articulation, historically informed playing technique, and a musical depth that can be heard in the great works of Bach and Silvius Leopold Weiss as well as in the lute repertoire of lesser-known composers.

Recordings with Carpe Diem Records

The recordings with Toyohiko Satoh released by Carpe Diem Records showcase multiple facets of his artistic work—from highly concentrated Baroque lute music to meditative and stylistically diverse programs. Most of his recordings for the label feature an original Baroque lute from 1611, which the artist had meticulously restored and plays exclusively with gut strings. These recordings offer the listener a deep insight into the world of historical lute music and the unique artistic language of a grand master of modern lute playing.
