About the album
Toyohiko Satoh, one of the most important and influential lute players of the last century, plays on this recording the largely unknown late works of French baroque composer and lutenist Robert De Visée, guitar teacher to the King Luis XIV.
Toyohiko Satoh plays on an original lute made by Laurentius Greiff in 1610, which gives this recording a very distinct sound and atmosphere.
DE VISÈE is a tribute to an old lute master of the Baroque by an old lute master of today, played on one of the most precious, rare and soulful instruments available for this repertoire.

私は、クラッシックは好きですが、素人です。確か、FMか、有線で聴いて、気になり、題名と奏者を調べて買いました。私は、朝以外にバロックを聴きたくなる事はありません。このCDはバロックだと思うのですが、夜も聴きたくなります。ずっと聴いていたいです。

この音楽をいったいどう形容したらいいのでしょうか。毎日の時間がただ慌ただしく、世俗の愚かさや、雑音のなかで過ぎていくことを嘆いている方（私もだが）、この佐藤氏のヴィゼーを聴こうではありませんか。このＣＤを夜中にかければ（朝でも昼でもいいですが）、数秒後には、自分が何か運命によってこの音楽を与えられ、深く深く慰められていることがわかるではないでしょうか。この音楽さえあれば精神の貴族という者になれる。薄っぺらな癒し系ではないですよ。絶美の音楽があなたを待っています。ヴァイスのリュート音楽は好きでしたが、ヴィゼーの音楽はその上を行くかもしれません。名演奏者佐藤豊彦さんにどれだけ感謝しても足りません。１７世紀のオリジナルだというリュートの音色は美しく（かそけきというより非常に明晰）、またこのＣＤは録音も凄いです。ＳＡ−ＣＤかと思いました。
Satoh-san is new to me - and I have a library of lute and theorbo discs - including the weiss/Lindberg stuff, Bream and Pascal Montheilet but this recording is very special. Partly its the instrument. These ancient lutes really do have a very unique and special sound but Satoh's playing gets right to the centre of De Visee's style. He writes a very loose rhythmic style - the notes seem to cascade over each other. It is the antithesis of the far more tightly organized Bach or Weiss pieces for the lute. Satoh understands this perfectly and makes these pieces seem to elide strict time, to stretch and expand and contract tempi until both player and listener become freed from the strict constraints of the metronome. I find this album is "out there" as jazzers would say - like miles davis time - very unusual and very special. Then theres the recording quality. The sense of intimacy on this recording is very intimate and very special. I can hear birdsong in the distant background but the lute in the foreground has a mesmerising tonal quality. If you have any sort of halfway decent hifi then this disc is an absolute must, whether or not you are a fan of lute pieces. If you are a fan - of either lute or classical in general - this is a very strong recommendation. You won't be disappointed.
