I have lots of CDs of Renaissance Lute music, particularly of the work of Spinacino and Canova da Milano. Peter Croton's interpretations are the most musical and sympathetic, to my mind.
Like the other reviewer I'd never heard of Peter Croton before. I did an internet search and found some videos of him playing. Even with my dodgy speakers it sounded pretty good so I decided to but this CD. I'm very happy that I did.This CD fulfills all three of my criteria for a great lute recording. First, the recording is good quality with a rich sound. Second, the instrumentation and stringing are spot on. Third and most importantly is the playing. Peter plays these pieces a fraction slower than most other players. This really helps to bring out the resonances of the music and their wonderful textures.I have over 30 lute CDs in my collection and this has quickly become one of my favourites. I will be on the look out for more from this guy.
Here's another Cd of solo lute music with two of my favourite composers of early italian Renaissance. Marvelous music, very well composed, played by a lute player unknown for me until this record. In fact Francesco da Milano and Francesco Spinaccino (like Marco d'all Aquila of Vincenzo Capirola and others) belong to that golden generation of early italian Renaissance lute composers whose music ilustrates very well his time and makes the solo lute music (and the lute as a solo instrument) advance very much in the court music of the period (with discoveries so important like start playing with the fingers instead of using a plectrum).And Peter Croton makes full justice to all this, playing with his soul and making a true magic recording.I'm very satisfied and recommend this Cd to all lovers of early Renaissance music for solo lute.
