About the album
Acclaimed English lutenist Anthony Bailes presents on his new CD a fine selection of Dutch lute music of the 17th Century, the “Golden Age” of Dutch cultural and artistic history. Despite the lute being of utmost importance in the musical life of that era, most of its music has not survived and it is rarely being played by today’s performers. This is the meaning and importance of this recording: It allows us, like a travel in time, to have a closer look into this fascinating culture and into the work of Dutch lutenists like Vallet, Huwet and especially van den Hove, contemporaries to such well-known artists as Rembrandt, Vermeer, van Eyck and Huygens.

Ce beau CD comble un vide dans la vaste discographie de la musique pour luth (largement européenne à son époque), en s'intéressant aux représentants principaux de cet instrument aux Pays-Bas, vers la fin du XVIème siècle et le début du XVIIème siècle. Le luth est souvent représenté dans les magnifiques tableaux flamands et hollandais de cette époque (Jan Steen, Franz Hals, Rombouts, Vermeer, etc...), et ce disque constitue en quelque sorte la bande son pour ces tableaux hélas muets.L'interprétation d'Anthony Bailes, luthiste ayant une longue carrière derrière lui, est élégante, la sonorité est raffinée, à l'image de l'instrument. Au début et à la fin (en apéritif et en dessert !), des pièces d'allure populaire (destinées à des pratiquants amateurs de l'époque) viennent habilement alléger un programme qui pourrait, de prime abord, sembler austère et érudit.La présentation du CD est irréprochable, les notes très soignées, l'illustration de couverture parfaitement adéquate.
